A Winter Birthday Card

Hello, Friends!

I'm happy to report that we didn't get the ice storm that was expected, which is wonderful!  We didn't really even get much rain.  Now if I had not planned ahead, we would have gotten a terrible storm and the power would have been out for a week!  Unfortunately, everyone was not so lucky.  There were lots of car accidents due to the ice in other areas where people were hurt or killed.  Please keep those families in your prayers.

You may recognize this stamp set from Sunday's card.  It is the Fair Isle Borders set which I used for the Scandinavian Noel card seen below.

While I had still had this stamp set out, I saw my email that said the  Wednesday Simon Says Stamp Challenge is Winter Birthday.   I have made cards for winter birthdays but they always just had the birthday theme, nothing specific for winter.   The brand new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge is Chill Out.  I think with my sweater background, my card helps with the chilly weather to warm up the birthday girl, so I'm entering it in that challenge, too.  I am also entering it in the Seize The Birthday Challenge Anything Goes.

Since I already had my Papertrey Ink Fair Isle Borders stamp set out and my stamps on my MISTI, I decided these stamps would work well for this challenge and put it back to work!  Instead of stamping each line a different color, I used my Kaliedacolor ink pad.  If you aren't familiar with Kaliedacolor ink pads, you need to check them out.  (Joann.com has the cheapest prices I've seen where you can get them 40% or 50% off, depending on their sales.)  There are five little ink pads that are stored in one case, but with a small space between them.  When you open the ink pad, there's a little piece of plastic that you push which moves the little separate ink pads right next to each other.  In the pad I used, Berry Blaze, this creates an ombre look that goes from pinks to purples.  When you are finished with the ink pad, you move the five little ink pads back to where they were so they store separate from each other and don't all blend into one big mess.  One of the great parts of these ink pads is that the lid won't fit on the case until the ink pads are separate from each other.  This way you can't accidentally leave them close to each other where they would accidentally blend together!  Using this ink pad, it was super easy to create multicolored look on my card!

After my stamping was done, I mounted my paper on matching colors of card stock from My Favorite Things.  I took pink and white twine and made a big "X" across the front of my card with it.  Then, I added a die cut I made from Papertrey Ink's Fillable Frames series in purple so my words would really stand out against the busy background.  I cut PTI's Wish Big sentiment out of purple, Boysenberry, card stock once and pink, Razzle Berry, card stock three times.  I glued the pink die cuts right on top of each other and then glued them to the purple one so it was offset just a bit.  This gave the sentiment a matching shadow.  It also gave the words a lot of dimension, which you can see in this picture below.

I love the bright and cheery nature of this card.  I'm not sure who I will send this to, however I know how gray and depressing the winter days can get.  Hopefully, this card will really brighten up the birthday girl's day!

I hope you've enjoyed my three cards as much as enjoyed making them and putting them here for you to see!  Hopefully, I will have more cards to share with you soon!

Happy Stamping!

Scandinavian Noel

Hello, Friends!

I hope you are reading this sitting down.  If you're not, I suggest you do so.  If you refuse, fall over and bust your head open, it will not be my fault.   You've been warned!

I MADE THREE CARDS THIS WEEK
and that doesn't include the flying pig!
I only made six cards the entire year of 2016!

Can you believe it?  I was here and I can hardly believe it!  I'm telling you this is the year for the unbelievable and so far we're off to a great start!  I worked on them every day this week, a little bit at a time, but I got them done!   I will have cards for you to see today, Monday and Tuesday.  I made them for different challenges, so I have to get them in or I'd spread them out for you.

Today's card is obviously a Christmas one!  I really missed making Christmas cards this past Christmas.  I have all these wonderful stamps just waiting to celebrate and they all had to stay in their packages.  On the bright side, there are Christmas challenges that go on year round so I could make a card for Christmas in January and look like I was preparing ahead of time instead of like a looney who didn't have a calendar!

Merry Monday is a challenge I used to enter before my back was injured.  I was super excited to participate in their current Merry Monday Challenge #230 to "make a Christmas card with the word Noel and/or a Scandinavian feel to it."  I decided to incorporate both items into my card.

My card is pretty self-explanatory.  I stamped the Fair Isle Borders stamps from Papertrey Ink repeatedly to stamp my background.  I choose the non-traditional colors of pink and a lime green just for fun.  I cut out the "Noel" word die from Stampin' Up twice, just to give it a little dimension.  This is a very fun font and looks good on fun and whimsical or elegant Christmas cards.  I adhered "Noel" to two rectangles, each cut with a die that adds stitching to go along with the sweater stitched feel of my background.  I put my rectangles on the card base with foam tape, because I believe every card is better with foam tape on it.  At least, that's what it appears from the cards I make!  Besides,  it gives dimension which adds interest!  At this point, it was cute but something was missing.  When I added the holly from a Papertrey Ink stamp set and coordinating die, the missing piece was clearly in place and the card was complete!

This card reminds me of something I would have made before I got hurt.  I know that styles change and in my head, my style has changed, too.  This is how the card turned out, though, with lots of layers instead of clean and simple.  I guess we'll all have to stay tuned to see what my style ends up being now.  From a practical standpoint, it would be much easier to make clean and simple cards that don't require getting up as much!  I think this card is happy and cheery.  I like it and hope you will, too!

I also learned something from this challenge!  The word "Noel" means Christmas.  So when you sing, "The first Noel the angels did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay" it means the first Christmas, Jesus' birth, the angels announced was to poor shepherds in the fields they were laying in (because it was night).  Later, the word "noel" with a lower case "n" began to mean a Christmas carol.  So if you were to sing a noel, it would be a Christmas carol, like Joy to the World.  Wiener dogs, cards and you, too, may have learned something new!

I will see you tomorrow!!!

Happy Stamping!
