Masked Heart Wreath

Hello, Friends!

Happy Monday!  Did you miss me last week?  For some reason, I was super tired all of last week.  It was that tired like you feel when you've got the flu, where you just can't go.  Thankfully, though, I didn't have any flu symptoms to go with the exhaustion!  I'm trying very hard to push myself but not to over-do it either, so when my body made it clear I needed rest, I took the time to rest.  Unfortunately, that meant I didn't get to stamp until Saturday night when I made this card.  I am just squeaking by to get it in the Papertrey Ink Make It Monday #272 Challenge:  Masked Heart Wreaths.

In the PTI challenge this week, Melissa who is an amazing member of the PTI Design Team demonstrated how to create a heart wreath use flower stamps and a heart mask.  This is Melissa's card.

Mimheartwreath1

A mask is just a covering that prevents all of your stamp from stamping on your paper.  It can be used to make it seem like one item is in front of another item, such as a penguin in front with a palm tree behind him.  The mask would allow the entire penguin to be seen, but only part of the palm tree because the penguin is in front.  In this case, the mask covered up a heart shaped area so when I stamped my images around it, the heart remained untouched.  To create this look, I die-cut a heart out of some card stock I had handy.  I put my white card stock on the MISTI and then used the magnets from it to hold the heart in place.

TIP:  A thinner paper, like copy paper or a post-it note would have probably been better.  The card stock had just a tiny bit of thickness to it, which didn't allow the stamps to stamp the entire image.  Instead, there was a little bit of space where the stamp had to go back down from the card stock heart to reach the card stock base.  It didn't really affect my heart wreath, but I'm giving it to you as a tip, in case you try this fun project yourself!

I used the flowers and leaves stamps from the Papertrey Ink stamp set Graceful Greetings to randomly stamp around the heart with an acrylic block.

TIP:  Putting your stamps on an acrylic block to stamp them is easier and faster than lining up your stamps with a MISTI.  A random looks is fun for your wreath, too.  (I did not have to find this out the hard way, but used my head to figure it out ahead of time!)

I used three colors of pink ink for my flowers and two colors of green ink for the leaves, which I will list below.  When I had filled the area around the heart, I removed my mask and my floral wreath was completed!  It was way easier than I thought it might be!

TIP: I wanted to be sure you could see the heart shape at the top of my wreath, so I didn't stamp very much of the flowers or leaves off of the mask.  That wasn't necessary.  As a result, my flowers don't show up at the top of the wreath as much as they do around the side.  Normally, I would have re-done it with this new knowledge, but my back made it clear this version would have to be fine.  :)

Using a new die from Papertrey Ink's Inspired:  Love set, I cut the "love" die cut out of card stock that matched my wreath.  The beginning of the "l" was a little long for the inside of my wreath, so I trimmed it down and adhered it to my heart.  Melissa used the same die cut on her card if you'd like to see what the whole thing looked like before I trimmed mine.

I also used satin ribbon that matched my wreath for an extra embellishment.  I used Papertrey Ink's Noted: Scalloped A2 Vertical Dies to create the base for my card.  I LOVE these dies!  I can guarantee you're going to see them again and again.  It makes the perfect A2 base for any card with the scallops around the edge!  There are also other dies included with the one for the base that fit perfectly inside the rectangle opening.  The white stitched rectangle my heart wreath was stamped on also came from this set of dies.  Based on the measurements of this rectangle, I added a pink rectangle, which matched my lightest pink ink, as one more mat for my card.

TIP:  Using products from a company that has set colors that they then make items to match those colors makes life so much easier!  Papertrey Ink makes matching buttons, ribbons, paper and inks all in the same colors.  Knowing I could grab Autumn Rose paper, ink and ribbon made making this card effortless.  Stampin' Up and My Favorite Things also make different products that match the same set of colors.  You'll see I use these products a lot in my card making because I can't stand long enough to try to find random items that just happen to match.

TIP THAT MIGHT COST YOU MONEY:  Right now Papertrey Ink has a huge SALE going on for their 10th anniversary.  All of their ribbon is on sale for $.50 a roll.  They also still have patterned paper on sale for $1 a pad.  Several other items, like ink pads and buttons, sold out on the first night.  For a former ribbon and paper collector who now uses her stash, this is a dream come true!  I already had this ribbon I used on my card, but it's so nice to be able to collect lots of colors, so no matter what your card calls for, you have it at your finger tips.  You can also buy 12 sheets of card stock for $3 and a matching ink cube for $2 from Papertrey Ink.  This is a great way to build your "matching" stash without spending a fortune!  I use their full size ink pads, which are $5.  This is still less than most full size ink pads for sale.

Besides the PTI challenge, I am also entering my card in my sweet friend's NBUS Challenge #8.  NBUS stands for "Never Before Used Schtuff."  Both my love die, the dies that made the card base, all of my ink colors and ribbon had not been used before I made this card.

I really enjoyed going to Papertrey Ink's post to see all of the different heart wreaths people created.  There was actually a big variety, considering we were all making the same basic design.  I encourage you to check it out here.
Happy Stamping!

Very pretty! Love the colors you chose. That word die looks just perfect on there. Even though it is time for Valentines Day and we think of reds and pinks mostly - I think fall colors with some leaves done in this heart would be stunning or poinsettia flowers and pine boughs. Using a color "suite" for all the inks and embelishments make it a lot easier to coordinate. I enjoyed looking at all the other submissions too. How on earth can they pick one winner? Great job Angela!!!!

Your card is stunning, Angela! I didn't have time (for some reason!) to play in the MIM, but I sure am enjoying the beautiful wreath hearts that you and others have made and adding this to my never-ending techniques to try. I'm bookmarking your post because of all the great tips! (I could have done without hearing about PTI's amazing sale, however, lol!) Thank you so much for playing in my NBUS Challenge #8! Take care! Hugs, Darnell

Love your card and color scheme! And I think it looks good with your flowers showing less at the top of the heart - it gives more weight to the bottom so it feels balanced. Just another way to look at it :)
